Inhabitants of the Andromeda Galaxy, the Wirrn were parasitic giant insects that swarmed across sectors of space, laying their eggs in living hosts and furthering their colonies. They claimed that humanity had invaded their colonies and fought them for over a thousand years. This explained their grudge against mankind. The Wirrn came across the cryogenically frozen survivors of humanity, after Earth was damaged by solar flares, aboard the converted Nerva Beacon space station, now a space ark. They used the station's solar stacks to breed in. The leader of the humans, Lazar, was infected by Wirrn tissue, gradually transforming into the new Wirrn Queen, intending to use Nerva as a breeding ground. The Doctor prevented access to the sleepers, so Lazar, now horribly infected, led the Wirrn to a space walk, attempting access via an escape shuttle hatch. The Doctor arranged for the shuttle to launch and, with his last shred of humanity, Lazar led the Wirrn into it, blasting off away from Nerva where he activated the self destruct mechanism.
