A manned space station, W3 doubled as a beacon for travellers as well as a research post. Its only means of defence was an X-Ray laser, which Jamie McCrimmon sabotaged to stop it being used on the Silver Carrier, a spaceship where the TARDIS had landed. The laser relied on bernalium, which was destroyed by Cybermats, placed there by Cybermen who were intent on taking over the station as a first step towards their latest invasion of Earth. Amongst the crew was Zoe Heriot who, after the Cybermen had been repelled, sneaked aboard the TARDIS to join Jamie and the Doctor.
