Inhabitants of the planet Marinus. The Voords were a group of vicious killers who sought to wrest control of the Conscience of Marinus away from its keeper, Arbitan. They came from their own part of Marinus in glass, airtight torpedoes, clad in black suits to protect them from the acid seas. Led by the evil Yartek, the Voords attempted to attack the TARDIS crew when they arrived. The crew were saved by Arbitan. Arbitan sent the Doctor and his travelling companions on a quest to locate the six keys of Marinus, which would enable him to use the Conscience to try and remove the evil from the minds of the Voords. However, shortly after the TARDIS crew set about their mission, Arbitan was murdered by one of the Voords. By the time the TARDIS crew returned, Yartek had taken control of the island and, wearing Arbitan's cloak, pretended to be Arbitan. He explained that the radiation from the machine had leaked, disfiguring him and making it unsafe to approach. Ian Chesterton appeared to accept this, giving him the final key. However, he had actually seen through his disguise. The key was a fake which caused the Conscience to explode, killing Yartek and the Voords.
