white guardian

The Guardians were physical embodiments of good and evil, light and dark, calm and chaos. The White Guardian foresaw that the Universe was on the verge of descending into the chaos for which his opposite, the Black Guardian, craved. He summoned the Doctor, setting him on a quest to find the Key to Time, a device separated into six disguised segments. Once placed together, the Key would literally stop the Universe for a few seconds, enabling the White Guardian to restore the balance. When the Doctor finally assembled the Key, the White Guardian was able to repair the damage. Before the Black Guardian could get the Key, the Doctor dispersed it again, earning the Black Guardian's eternal hatred. The Doctor eventually became embroiled in one of the many games played by the Eternals - the race for the Enlightenment Crystal. The White Guardian warned the Doctor that there was more to the Enlightenment Crystal than even the Eternals realised. When the race was won, it was Turlough who held the Enlightenment Crystal. Both Guardians then asked him to choose, light or dark. Turlough opted for light and the Black Guardian was expelled, although not destroyed as the White Guardian still existed, dark always necessary to balance the light.
