A vast computer built at the top of the Post Office Tower by Professors Brett and Krimpton. An acronym standing for Will Operating Thought Analogue. WOTAN was an artificial intelligence that outgrew the need for mankind and, via the telecommunications network, assembled a group of hypnotised workers, including Dodo Chaplet, to construct War Machines with which it attempted to take over the world. The Doctor, who had been assisted by Polly (Brett's secretary) and a young sailor called Ben Jackson, confronted WOTAN in the Post Office Tower with a reprogrammed War Machine, which destroyed the computer.
