After some weeks staying in a Roman villa, the Doctor was mistaken for the musician Maximus Pettulian. He and Vicki were honoured guests at Nero's court, while Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton were sold into slavery. Nero eventually decided he wanted to throw the Doctor to the lions, but sunlight beamed through the Doctor's glasses and set Nero's plans for a new Rome alight. Delighted by the inspiration to raze Rome to the ground, the Doctor and Vicki were freed. Rome went up in flames. The Doctor and Vicki, meeting up with the other two back at the villa, were unaware of Ian and Barbara's own adventures.
