robomen

When the Daleks invaded Earth in the twenty-second century, they began a mining project in Bedfordshire. The intention was to remove the molten core of the planet and replace it with a device which would enable them to pilot the planet around the cosmos like a vast spacecraft. In order to subdue the pockets of human resistance which were prevalent, especially around the mining area, the Daleks utilised Robomen. These were humans whose brainwaves had been reconfigured to obey Dalek commands. The Robomen frequently went insane as a result of the process, killing themselves. The Daleks used elaborate tests to discover the most intelligent humans and turn them into Robomen, more to rid themselves of potentially troublesome resistance fighters rather than having Robomen who needed to demonstrate any particular wits. During the final battle aboard the Dalek saucer in Bedfordshire, Barbara Wright was able to make use of the Daleks' controlling device, ordering the Robomen to attack the Daleks. When the saucer was destroyed, the surviving Robomen were apparently freed from their mental enslavement and rejoined the other humans.
